    The birth of a baby ushers in unbridled joy & happiness in the family. The air is rife with excitement, plans to host various rituals and parties announcing the arrival of the baby, but amidst all this celebration there lurks a quite negativity – depression.



    Sometimes new moms tend to undergo an emotional upheaval or baby blues which includes mood swings ranging from euphoria to uncontrolled/unreasonable anger. A sudden weepy spell for reasons unknown. This emotional roller coaster fades gradually with time but there is another far serious and long lasting phenomenon called “Post-Partum Depression”. Postpartum depression as its name suggests occurs after the birth of the baby.


    N:B: Postpartum depression happens when you have delivered baby within 12 months.



    Symptoms:


    You may be having postpartum depression if you exhibit one or more of these symptoms,



    • Sadness to the core of your heart and not knowing why you are actually sad
    • Hopelessness – You feel like a complete failure
    • Bonding – You just may not feel connected to the baby and are on autopilot, doing things mechanically
    • Guilty – You feel guilty because you can’t rejoice in the feel and touch of the baby, consequently thinking that you are a bad mother.
    • Numbness – There is absolute lack of emotions.
    • Crying – Sudden spells of crying without any known or unknown cause.
    • Identity crisis – You feel as if you have lost your identity.
    • Fear – fear of losing the baby
    • Lack of concentration in any task
    • Appetite issues - A tendency to overeat or not eat at all
    • Insomnia – Unable to sleep when baby sleeps or any time at all
    • Diminished or lack of sexual desire
    All these or some of the symptoms denotes postpartum depression.


    Treatment:


    The good news about postpartum depression is that it is treatable. Recovery from postpartum is not uniform across the patients and is determined by the severity of your depression.



    The first step in getting rid of postpartum depression is to talk it out. Do not bottle up your fears, insecurities and anxieties, share them with your trusted friends & family members.



    Make sure you have some I/Me alone time for you to distress.



    Join or form a group of new mothers who are in the same ship as you.


    Professional treatment


    Counseling:


    Counseling will help a great deal to combat postpartum depression. Sometimes even family therapy instead of individual therapy addresses the underlying causes and helps in alleviating the depression.



    Hormone Therapy:

    Estrogen replacement is given to offset the loss of estrogen during childbirth. This goes a long way in helping the patients to deal with the depression



    Antidepressants:

    Antidepressants are often given as a last resort since they tend to have side effects on the babies who are on mother’s milk. Check with your doctor and take only those medicines prescribed by the doctor.
